Originally built in 1929 as a hunting and fishing lodge for a private owner, Sky Lodge has been welcoming guests for almost 100 years. The lodge itself provides understated elegance with sweeping views of the mountains and the Moose River Valley below. When you step inside you’ll be swept back in time by the beauty of the meticulously restored structure; the largest fully log lodge east of the Mississippi River.
Its beauty is only matched by our authentic hospitality, simple yet exceptional dining, and unrivaled setting for wild bird hunts and wing shooting. Our service is attentive, while not being overstated, providing you a bit of luxury perfectly matched for this historic Maine hunting lodge.
Wing Shooting & Upland Hunting
Our region offers some of the best wing shooting country in the east. With grouse and woodcock in great abundance and coverts to match any skill level, experience level or physical ability, you can enjoy some of the best days afield you’ll ever have.
We’re often asked about the number of birds typically seen per day. Our friends at Grey’s Outfitting note – please keep in mind that this is wild bird hunting, and that weather, migration of woodcock, and a host of other factors all contribute to how many birds we see each day. On tough weather days, we’ve seen fifteen flushes. On a decent day with solid dogs, and a day that they consider successful, you will see between thirty-five and fifty flushes. They have also had days where all of mother nature’s components clicked and they had ninety-seven (2012) and ninety-three (2011) flushes in one day. As they say, that’s why they call it hunting. To the team at Grey’s, it is about time afield with hunting dogs, seeing the beautiful country that exists up here, getting your boots muddy, and developing friendships that last a lifetime
Guided Hunts with Grey’s Outfitting
(New for 2021)
Booking hunts in 2021, join Grey’s Outfitting for an incredible upland hunting experience. The guides from Grey’s consider themselves a well-rounded guide service, however they built their name on guiding upland hunts. They train dogs professional all spring, summer, and fall and are in the woods running dogs daily. Their familiarity with bird habitat, numbers, and the methods and styles with which to hunt them is unparalleled.
Having hunted and guided in Maine for the last fifteen years, they have a variety of coverts to pick from and pair with your dog, your hunting group, or yourself if you are coming up alone. With hundreds of thousands of acres of wilderness, finding a piece of covert that is out of the way is their goal, as is locating birds that are not dog or human shy.
Their Elhew Bred English Pointers are some of the best in the region and are run on grouse and woodcock exclusively all year except for when snow depths prohibit accessing coverts. Their finished dogs assist us in training client dogs, and by the time hunting season arrives each dog is in peak physical shape, emotionally balanced, and intellectually prepared to work for you during your hunt. Their guides use the same approach and pride themselves on very much the same criteria.
In the event you own your dog or dogs, they welcome all of you as long as you’d like to hunt over them during your stay. Typically, Grey’s provides other dogs as “back-up” in the event you’d like to rest your dog for a portion of the day. Depending on your preferences they can make a variety of dogs available to you – Field Bred English Cockers, Finished Pointers, or dogs of either breed that are in development.
